What we paint

Painting services

One room or the whole house? We look at the surfaces, talk colors and sheen, and give you a written quote.

The Honolulu Painting Company paints houses, condo units, rental apartments, shops and offices in Honolulu and across Oahu. We work in town from Kaimuki and Manoa to Waikiki, east to Hawaii Kai, over the Pali in Kailua and Kaneohe, and west through Aiea, Pearl City, Waipahu, Mililani, Ewa Beach and Kapolei. The work covers interior walls, ceilings and trim, full exteriors, kitchen cabinets, decks, lanais and fences, plus the repairs that have to come before paint. We are licensed and insured.

Homes here are not built like mainland homes, and paint has a different job. Older single-wall houses rely on paint to protect the boards that hold them up. Hollow tile and concrete homes chalk and crack in the sun. Condo towers bring house rules on hours and elevators. The weather never freezes, but the sun is strong all year, salt air rusts every nail head and railing, and mildew grows wherever a wall stays shaded and damp. So we wash, treat and prime before we paint.

A job starts with a free visit. We look at the surfaces, ask about the age of the building and any association rules, and measure. You get a written quote that lists the areas, the prep, the paint and the price. On the agreed day we cover floors, furniture and plants, do the washing and repairs, prime, and apply the finish coats. Outside, we plan around showers and let the walls dry. At the end we walk the job with you and fix anything you point out.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to paint a house in Honolulu?

By national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026, an interior costs $3,500 to $10,000 and an exterior $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot of wall. Those are not our quotes. Size, prep and paint set your price, and we give it in writing after a free visit.

Do painters need a licence in Hawaii?

Yes, for jobs over $1,500 in labor and materials. Painting is a C-33 specialty contractor licence from the state's Contractors License Board. You can check any licence at cca.hawaii.gov/businesscheck. The Honolulu Painting Company is licensed and insured.

Do I need a permit to paint my house in Honolulu?

No. The City and County of Honolulu lists painting as work that does not need a building permit. If you are in a condo or community association, you may need its approval for an exterior color.

When is the best time to paint an exterior in Honolulu?

The dry season, about May to September, is easiest. Painting goes on all year here, since it never gets too cold. In the wetter months and on the windward side we work around the showers.

My house was built before 1978. What about lead paint?

Older paint layers may contain lead. Contractors paid to disturb that paint must follow the federal EPA lead-safe work rule. Ask any painter how they handle it, and ask us about your home when we visit.

How long does a paint job take?

Most rooms take 1 to 2 days. A full exterior usually takes 3 to 5 days, depending on the size of the house and the weather.
