Waipahu grew up as a sugar plantation town, and you can still see that in the older streets near the former mill. Small wood plantation-style houses with single-wall boards and metal roofs stand close to newer homes, apartment blocks and shops along Farrington Highway. Around the old town are large newer areas such as Waikele, Royal Kunia and Village Park, with framed houses and townhouses in planned subdivisions. Waipahu is warm and fairly dry, so sun does more harm to paint than rain. Old board walls dry out, crack along the grain and shed paint on the sunny side. Red dirt stains the base of walls in the upper areas. Older houses may have lead in the early paint layers. We paint both the old wood homes and the newer subdivisions.
