Kaimuki is one of Honolulu's older neighborhoods, on the dry slope behind Diamond Head. Many of its houses were built in the first half of the 1900s. They are small single-wall wood homes on post-and-pier foundations, with board walls, wood windows and a front lanai. Single-wall boards are both the structure and the finish, so the paint is what keeps the weather out of them. Decades of repainting leave thick, brittle layers that crack and peel, and paint that old may contain lead. Kaimuki is sunny and fairly dry, so the south and west sides fade and split first. Higher up on Wilhelmina Rise and Maunalani Heights the wind is stronger. Waialae Avenue has older shopfronts that need repainting too. We scrape, prime and repaint with care for old wood.
