Cabinet Painting in Honolulu: Cost, Methods and How Long It Lasts

Cabinet painting questions for Honolulu kitchens: national cost figures, oak, laminate and thermofoil, spray or brush, how long it takes and how it holds up.

Cabinet Painting in Honolulu: Cost, Methods and How Long It Lasts

Painting kitchen cabinets costs $2,000 to $6,500 for an average kitchen in 2026, by national published figures. That is well under the cost of new cabinets. In Honolulu, where new cabinets are shipped in, painting sound boxes and doors is often the practical choice. Here are the questions we hear most.

Price ranges on this page are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026. They are not our quotes. Hawaii labor, shipped-in materials and the condition of your own walls move the number up or down. Last checked October 2026.

How much does it cost to paint kitchen cabinets?

Nationally it costs $2,000 to $6,500 to have the cabinets in an average kitchen painted. HomeGuide also lists $30 to $70 per linear foot, $70 to $125 per door and $30 to $110 per drawer front.

Kitchen sizeNational range
Small (70 to 100 sq ft)$1,000 to $3,500
Average (100 to 200 sq ft)$2,000 to $6,500
Large (200 sq ft or more)$5,000 to $10,000

Many Honolulu condo kitchens are small galley kitchens, so the first row is often the one to look at.

How much for 20 or 30 cabinet doors and drawers?

Using the published per-piece figures, 20 cabinet doors at $70 to $125 each comes to $1,400 to $2,500, and 30 cabinet doors comes to $2,100 to $3,750. Drawer fronts are listed at $30 to $110 each, so ten drawers add $300 to $1,100. The cabinet boxes and end panels are on top of that. This is arithmetic on national figures, not our quote. Count your doors and drawers before you call and we can talk through the job.

Is it cheaper to paint, reface or replace cabinets?

Painting is the cheapest of the three. The national figures are:

OptionNational range
Refinishing (stain or clear coat)$1,500 to $4,500
Painting$2,000 to $6,500
Replacing the doors only$2,200 to $6,600
Refacing$5,000 to $13,000
Full replacement$4,500 to $15,000

Refacing means new doors and drawer fronts plus a new skin on the boxes. Replacement on Oahu also means shipping time and often new counters. Paint makes sense when the boxes are solid and you like the layout.

Painting or refinishing cabinets: what is the difference in cost?

Refinishing is listed at $1,500 to $4,500 and painting at $2,000 to $6,500, so refinishing is a little cheaper on the national figures. Refinishing means stripping or sanding and then a new stain or clear coat, so the wood grain still shows. Painting covers the grain with a solid color. Refinishing only works on real wood in good shape. Paint can go over wood, MDF and, with the right primer, some laminates.

Are 1990s oak cabinets worth painting, and can oak go white?

Yes, solid oak cabinets are worth painting if the boxes and hinges are sound, and oak can go white. Two things need care. Oak has open grain that shows through paint unless it is filled first, so decide if you want a smooth face or a painted-wood look. Oak also holds tannins that can turn white paint yellow or brown unless a stain-blocking primer goes on first.

Koa and other local hardwood cabinets are a different case. Think hard before painting those. Refinishing keeps the wood, and that is usually worth more.

Can you paint laminate or thermofoil cabinets?

Laminate can be painted if it is firmly stuck down, cleaned, scuff-sanded and primed with a bonding primer. Thermofoil is harder. It is a thin vinyl skin over MDF, and in a hot, humid kitchen it often starts to peel at the edges near the oven and dishwasher. Paint will not hold on a skin that is letting go. In that case the skin comes off and the MDF is primed and painted, or the doors are replaced.

Spray or brush for cabinets, and are doors sprayed off site?

Spraying gives the smoothest finish on cabinet doors, and brushing and rolling is common for the boxes that stay in the kitchen. Many painters take doors and drawer fronts away to spray them flat in a shop, then spray or roll the frames on site. HomeGuide lists spray painting at $40 to $100 per linear foot, against $30 to $70 for cabinet painting in general. Ask us how we would handle your kitchen. It depends on the space, the building and, in a condo, the house rules on spraying.

Can cabinets be painted without removing the doors?

They can, but the result is not as good. Painting without removing the doors leaves hinge edges unpainted, puts drips where doors meet frames and makes it hard to coat the edges that get touched most. The proper way is doors off, hardware off, each piece labeled, and both sides painted flat.

How long does cabinet painting take and can I use the kitchen?

Cabinet painting takes 3 to 5 days by the national figures. You can use your kitchen for most of that time with some limits. The counters, sink and fridge stay in place, but the cabinets are open and empty, and the doors are away or drying. Plan for simple meals. Humid Honolulu air slows drying, so we do not rush the time between coats.

Will painted cabinets chip or peel?

Good cabinet paint will not peel if the prep was right, but any painted cabinet can chip where it is hit hard. Peeling comes from grease or gloss left under the primer. Chips come at the edges of doors near the sink and trash, and around handles. Degreasing, sanding, a bonding primer and a hard cabinet enamel are what prevent both. Keep a little of the paint for touch-ups.

How long does cabinet paint last, compared with a factory finish?

Painted kitchen cabinets last 8 to 15 years, by the published figure. A factory finish is baked or cured in controlled conditions and is harder than anything applied in a home, so it usually outlasts a repaint. A careful repaint with a cabinet-grade enamel comes close for normal family use. It needs a few weeks to reach full hardness, so be gentle at first.

What paint do pros use on cabinets for a smooth finish?

For a smooth finish with no brush marks, cabinet painters use an enamel made for cabinets and trim, not wall paint. These are usually water-based alkyd or urethane-modified enamels that level out as they dry and cure hard. The primer under it matters as much: a bonding primer on slick surfaces and a stain blocker on oak or knotty wood. We do not name one brand as the answer. Ask us what we would use on your doors and why.

I painted my cabinets myself and they look bad. Can a pro fix them?

Yes. If you painted your cabinets yourself and they are sticky, peeling or full of brush marks, they can be fixed, but it is more work than painting bare doors. Paint that is peeling has to come off. Paint that is sound but rough can be sanded flat, primed and recoated. Wall paint on cabinets stays soft and usually has to be removed or sealed. We look at a door or two and tell you plainly which case you have.
