Painting the wall types found in Honolulu: single-wall wood, plywood panel and shingle siding, hollow tile, stucco, plus vinyl, aluminum and brick.

Painting Wood Siding, Hollow Tile, Stucco, Brick and Vinyl in Honolulu

Honolulu houses are mostly wood boards, plywood panel siding, fiber cement, hollow tile and stucco. Vinyl siding, aluminum siding and brick houses are rare here, but we are asked about them, so they are covered too. We start with the walls you are most likely to have.

Price ranges on this page are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026. They are not our quotes. Hawaii labor, shipped-in materials and the condition of your own walls move the number up or down. Last checked October 2026.

What paint is best on wood siding, and will paint fix dry cracked wood?

The best paint for wood siding is a top-grade 100% acrylic latex over a primer on any bare wood. Paint will not fix dry, cracked wood. It only covers it. Deep cracks have to be filled or caulked, grey weathered wood has to be sanded back to sound fiber, and bare spots need primer. Then paint will hold.

Older Honolulu homes are often single-wall construction. One layer of redwood or fir boards, set upright with tongue-and-groove joints, is the whole wall. Those boards are thin, and paint is what keeps the weather out. Plywood panel siding such as T1-11, common on later homes, needs its lower edges and grooves sealed well, because that is where it soaks up water.

How much to paint a cedar shingle house?

No published figure exists for a cedar shingle house by itself. HomeGuide lists wood siding in general at $1.50 to $5.00 per square foot as a national figure. Shingles take more paint or stain and more time than flat boards, because of the gaps and the rough faces. Shingle walls are found on some older Honolulu homes in Manoa, Nuuanu and Makiki. Many were stained, not painted, and a stained shingle wall should be re-stained unless it is properly primed first.

Can you paint stucco, and what paint sticks to it?

Yes, you can paint stucco, and the same goes for hollow tile and concrete walls. Use a 100% acrylic masonry paint, or an elastomeric coating where there are many fine cracks. New stucco and concrete must cure before painting. Old masonry needs a wash, removal of any loose or chalky paint, and a masonry primer or conditioner where the surface is powdery. HomeGuide lists stucco painting at $1.00 to $5.50 per square foot nationally.

Do hairline cracks in stucco need fixing first?

Hairline cracks do not need a separate repair if you are using an elastomeric or high-build coating, which bridges them. Cracks you can fit a coin edge into should be opened slightly, filled with a flexible masonry patch or caulk, and primed before painting. Cracks that are wide, growing or stepped along block joints point to movement or water, and that should be looked at before any paint goes on.

How often does stucco need painting?

Stucco needs painting every 5 to 7 years, by the published national figure. On Oahu, look at the wall, not the calendar. Fading, chalk on your hand when you rub it, dark mildew streaks and new cracks are the signs. Sheltered walls last longer than the south and west sides.

Is painting brick a bad idea, and does it trap moisture?

Painting brick is not always a bad idea, but it is hard to undo and the wrong paint can trap moisture. Brick takes in and gives off water. A film that does not breathe holds that moisture in the brick, and the paint then blisters and the face of the brick can flake. If brick is painted, use a breathable masonry paint or a mineral-based coating. Whole brick houses are rare in Honolulu. Here the question usually comes up for a brick or lava rock planter, wall or fireplace.

Should I paint my brick or leave it natural?

Leave it natural if it is in good shape and you like it. Natural brick and lava rock need almost no upkeep. Once painted, they need repainting for good, and stripping paint off masonry is slow and costly. Paint your brick only if it is already painted, badly stained or patched in a way that cannot be matched. HomeGuide lists brick painting at $1.50 to $4.50 per square foot nationally.

Can you paint vinyl siding?

Yes, you can paint vinyl siding with a 100% acrylic paint made for vinyl, after a thorough wash. Vinyl siding is uncommon on Oahu, but vinyl fences, vinyl window frames and some newer cladding are found here. HomeGuide lists vinyl siding painting at $1 to $3 per square foot nationally and says the paint lasts 5 to 10 years.

Can vinyl siding be painted a darker color, or will it warp?

Vinyl can warp if it is painted a darker color than it was made in, unless the paint is a vinyl-safe color. Dark colors take in more heat, and vinyl softens and buckles when it gets too hot. Honolulu sun makes that risk greater, not smaller. Paint makers publish lists of vinyl-safe colors for this reason. Stay with a color as light as the original or lighter, or choose from a vinyl-safe list.

Does painting vinyl siding void the warranty?

It can. Some vinyl siding makers state that painting voids the warranty, and others allow it with conditions. Read the warranty for your product, or ask the maker, before you paint. If the siding is old enough that the warranty has run out, the question no longer matters.

Can you paint aluminum siding?

Yes. Aluminum siding takes paint well once it is washed free of chalk and any bare metal is primed. Use a 100% acrylic exterior paint. HomeGuide lists the national cost at $1 to $4 per square foot and a paint life of 5 to 10 years. In Honolulu the same method is used on aluminum patio covers, awnings, gutters and window frames. Near the ocean, look for white, powdery corrosion and clean it off before priming.
