Decks, lanais and wood fences in Honolulu get sun every day of the year, plus salt, showers and mildew. Flat boards take the worst of it. A finish that lasts ten years on a wall may last two on a deck. Here are the common questions.
Price ranges on this page are national figures published by HomeGuide for 2026. They are not our quotes. Hawaii labor, shipped-in materials and the condition of your own walls move the number up or down. Last checked October 2026.
How much does it cost to stain a deck?
It costs $1.50 to $4 per square foot to have a deck stained, by national figures, or $450 to $1,000 for an average deck. For a 12x16 deck the published professional range is $301 to $775, and for a 12x12 deck $226 to $582. Railings are listed at $4 to $12 per linear foot.
| Method | National cost per square foot |
|---|---|
| Stain and seal | $0.50 to $1.50 |
| Power wash, stain and seal | $1.00 to $2.50 |
| Power sand, stain and seal | $2.00 to $4.00 |
| Strip, stain and seal | $2.50 to $5.50 |
A fence costs $2 to $14 per linear foot to paint or stain, or $300 to $2,800 on average, by the same source.
Should I paint or stain my deck?
Stain is the better choice for most deck floors. Stain soaks into the wood and wears away slowly. Paint forms a film on top, and on a flat surface that holds water, the film cracks and peels. Once a deck is painted, it has to be kept painted or stripped. Paint does have a place: on railings and posts, and on an old deck too rough for stain to look good. HomeGuide lists deck painting at $2 to $5 per square foot nationally.
Solid or semi-transparent stain on an old deck?
Use a solid stain on an old deck and a semi-transparent stain on newer wood in good shape. Semi-transparent stain shows the grain, so it also shows every repair and grey patch. Solid stain looks like thin paint, hides mixed old and new boards, and has more pigment to block the sun. In Honolulu's strong sun, more pigment means longer life. Clear sealers with no pigment give the least protection here.
How often does a deck need restaining?
A deck needs restaining every 2 to 3 years, by the published national figure. In full Honolulu sun, and near the ocean, expect the short end of that or sooner. Covered lanais last longer. A simple test: sprinkle water on the boards. If it soaks in fast and darkens the wood, it is time.
Can you paint a deck that was previously stained, or stain one that was painted?
A deck that was previously stained can be painted or coated with a solid stain, after cleaning and sanding. A deck that was already painted cannot be stained until the paint is stripped off, because stain has to soak into bare wood. Stripping is slow, and HomeGuide lists strip, stain and seal work at $2.50 to $5.50 per square foot. On a painted deck in fair shape, repainting or a solid stain made to go over old coatings is the usual answer.
Why is my deck stain peeling after a year?
Deck stain is peeling because it sat on the surface instead of soaking in. The usual reasons are stain put on damp wood, on new wood that was still sealed by its mill glaze, over an old coating, or put on too thick. Solid stains peel more than penetrating ones. Sun on a dark deck speeds it up. The fix is to remove what is loose, clean and sand, and recoat thinly with a product that suits what is already on the boards.
How long to wait before staining a new deck or pressure-treated fence?
Wait until new pressure-treated wood has dried, which takes from a few weeks to a few months. Pressure-treated lumber is the norm on Oahu because of termites, and it arrives wet from treatment. Do the water test: when drops soak in and no longer bead, the wood is ready. Kiln-dried lumber and redwood can be coated sooner. Do not wait too long either. Bare wood in island sun turns grey in weeks.
Can I stain a deck while the wood is damp?
No. Damp wood will not take stain properly. The water in the wood keeps the stain out, so it sits on top, dries patchy and peels. After washing or rain, give the deck one to two dry days, and longer in shade or on the windward side. Also avoid staining in full midday sun, when the boards are hot and the stain flashes dry before it can soak in.
Should I stain or paint my wood fence?
Stain your wood fence in most cases. Stain is easier to renew, since it fades away and a fresh coat goes straight on. Paint on a fence peels in time and has to be scraped. Paint or solid stain makes sense when you want a set color, such as white, or the fence was already painted. Wash off mildew and red dirt first. No lifespan figure is published for fence finishes.
Is an old fence worth staining or should it be replaced?
An old fence is worth staining if the posts are firm and most boards are sound. Push each post at the top. If posts rock, are rotted at the ground or have termite damage, replace the fence or those sections before spending on stain. Pine or fir boards that are grey but hard clean up well. Boards that crumble at the bottom edge have had their day.
