Humid air loosens wallpaper paste, so seams lift and mildew can grow behind the paper in Honolulu homes and condos. We strip the paper, wash off the paste, repair and prime the wall, and leave it ready for paint.
Wallpaper in Honolulu has a hard life. Humid air and salt work on the paste, so seams lift and corners curl, most of all in bathrooms, kitchens and condo units that sit closed up for part of the year. Mildew can grow behind loose paper where you cannot see it. When paper starts to fail like that, painting over it only hides the problem for a while. Taking it off and starting with a clean wall is the lasting fix.
How the paper comes off depends on what is under it. In condos and newer homes the wall is usually drywall, and paper hung without a primer can pull the drywall face off with it. Older single-wall homes may have paper or fabric over wood boards or old fiberboard panels. We test a small patch first. Then we score, wet or steam the paper, strip it, and wash every trace of paste off the wall so new paint will stick.
After the paper is gone the wall nearly always needs work. We fill gouges, seal any torn drywall paper with a primer made for that, and skim coat areas that are too rough to paint. Then the wall is sanded, primed and painted, with a mildew-resistant finish in damp rooms. In a condo we follow the house rules on work hours, elevators and waste. Wallpaper removal in Honolulu: common questions
Can you paint over wallpaper instead of removing it in my Honolulu home?
Sometimes, but we do not advise it in most homes here. Humidity loosens paste over time, and the seams show through paint. If the paper is tight, dry and smooth it can be primed with an oil-based primer and painted. Removal is the better long-term answer.
How much does wallpaper removal cost?
National figures published by HomeGuide for 2026 put wallpaper removal at $0.80 to $3.00 per square foot, or $320 to $1,200 for an average room. Those are not our quotes. We price your walls after a free visit, because the wall under the paper sets the work.
Will my walls need repair after the wallpaper comes off?
Usually some. Paste has to be washed off, and torn spots need sealing and filling. Walls that come out rough may need a skim coat before paint. We tell you what we expect after a test patch, and we put it in the written quote.
